Malleable (Semi-Rigid) Penile Implants

Not every man needs — or wants — an inflatable device. A malleable penile implant is the simplest prosthesis there is: two bendable rods, no pump, nothing to operate. Bend it up for intercourse, bend it down to conceal.

Dr. Edward Gheiler, MD, FACS offers both malleable and inflatable penile implants in Miami and recommends the device that fits each man’s anatomy, health, and priorities — not a one-size-fits-all answer. Most of his 400+ implant procedures a year are inflatable AMS 700 devices, but for the right patient a malleable implant is the better choice.

Malleable vs. inflatable at a glance

  • Simplicity. Malleable: nothing to pump or operate. Inflatable: a concealed scrotal pump controls rigidity.
  • Appearance. Inflatable devices look natural both flaccid and erect; a malleable device is always firm and is positioned by hand.
  • Dexterity. Malleable implants suit men with arthritis, tremor, or limited hand strength.
  • Surgery. Both are outpatient procedures through a small incision.

Which one is right for you?

The honest answer depends on your hands, your health, your partner, and your expectations. Dr. Gheiler will examine you, explain both devices plainly, and tell you which he would choose in your situation — including when the answer is the simpler, less expensive malleable rod. Frequently asked questions

What is a malleable penile implant?

A pair of bendable rods placed inside the erectile chambers. The penis is bent up for intercourse and bent down to conceal — no pump, no mechanism. It is the simplest type of penile prosthesis.

Malleable vs. inflatable — what’s the difference?

An inflatable implant is flaccid until pumped up, giving the most natural look in both states. A malleable implant is always firm and positioned by hand, which makes it simpler to use. Most men choose inflatable; malleable suits men who want maximum simplicity or have limited hand dexterity.

Who is a good candidate for a malleable implant?

Men who want the simplest device, men with limited hand dexterity (for example severe arthritis), and some complex revision cases. Dr. Gheiler offers both types and recommends what fits your anatomy and priorities.

Can a malleable implant be switched to inflatable later?

In many cases, yes. Replacing one prosthesis type with another is a form of revision surgery, which Dr. Gheiler performs routinely.
