At our South Florida urology office, we are home to one of only ten certified urologists trained in performing the Penuma implant procedure. With over twenty years of experience in a variety of urological services, the offices of Dr. Edward Gheiler want to offer some guidance on eligibility for the Penuma implant and whether this procedure may be right for you.
To gain better insight into whether this procedure is right for you, please complete our pre-surgery eligibility for penile implant questionnaire.
The penuma implant is an FDA-approved penile enhancement procedure. This procedure is not for erectile dysfunction treatment, which may involve oral medication, injections, or other implant procedures.
Physical eligibility for the Penuma procedure concerns three main requirements:
If a patient has had any previous penile enhancement surgery prior to the Penuma procedure, they may not be eligible as these procedures may cause scarring or infection.
A patient must be circumcised to be eligible for the Penuma implant. If an uncircumcised patient wishes to receive the procedure, he must schedule a circumcision procedure and have fully healed before proceeding with the Penuma implant.
The last physical requirement for a safe and effective procedure is that the patient refrains from using tobacco products for a few months before and after the procedure. Patients must avoid tobacco use as it is associated with complications in healing.
If the patient meets the three physical requirements above, we undergo further examination to ensure a successful procedure. Patients are evaluated for comorbid conditions, including diabetes and sexually transmitted diseases and infections, as these conditions may affect the surgery.
Our specialists will require a list of any medications currently being taken by the patient to ensure no side effects could affect the surgery or recovery.
Finally, we evaluate drug or alcohol abuse, which prevents proper bodily and mental healing functions, along with any other genital and skin health. Genital and skin health are evaluated through a physical examination to ensure no complications from the procedure.
In addition to evaluating physical requirements, our offices assess important psychological factors to ensure the procedure is right for the patient. We evaluate a variety of psychological factors, including body image perception and patient expectation. Psychological evaluations are primarily conducted through pre-screening questionnaires and consultations and are necessary to ensure that the patient understands and is mentally fit for the procedure.
These psychological evaluations additionally assist us in ensuring that psychological factors don’t result in post-procedure dissatisfaction.
After we assess that both the physical and psychological requirements have been met, our offices can schedule the procedure. These pre-screening requirements are done to give our patients a safe and intended treatment.
